Technical Support Engineer – Presales

Remote (UK), with regular travel to client and prospect sites across the UK ~ Full-time, permanent ~ Reporting to the Technical Services Manager

Role Summary

Opious delivers managed network services — including managed Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, and physical security infrastructure — to enterprise clients across the UK and Europe. We're looking for a Technical Support Engineer to act as our technical expert across both presales and support — helping win the work, then supporting it once it's live.

On the presales side, you'll be the technical voice in front of prospects and clients: surveying sites, scoping and sizing solutions, and giving customers confidence in what Opious will deliver. On the support side, that same technical depth goes into the live estate — diagnosing faults remotely, attending site where needed, and seeing issues through to resolution. Designs are better when the person producing them also supports what gets built, so the balance between the two sides will flex with demand.

The role includes participation in the on-call rota, with occasional out-of-hours working for maintenance windows and live site escalations.

Key Responsibilities

The key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Act as technical lead alongside the sales team in customer meetings, calls, and site visits

  • Carry out presales site surveys and feasibility assessments — wireless coverage, cellular signal, cable routes, power and mounting constraints

  • Produce wireless designs and validate access point count and placement against real coverage and capacity needs

  • Design cellular and hybrid WAN solutions, including carrier and band selection and failover behaviour

  • Interpret client design packs and specifications, flagging gaps or errors early

  • Produce technical proposals, designs, bills of materials, and RFP/tender responses

  • Give customers honest technical confidence, including saying when something won't work

  • Take ownership of support tickets, diagnosing remotely first and attending site for escalations and complex faults

  • Diagnose WAN, cellular, and LAN-side faults

  • Validate and commission deployed solutions against the original design

  • Participate in the on-call rota for out-of-hours escalations

About You

  • Strong networking fundamentals — addressing, DHCP, VLANs, routing, PoE

  • Experience in a customer-facing technical role — presales, solutions engineering, or senior field support

  • The ability to scope and design solutions and translate customer requirements into a workable, costed approach

  • Practical design judgement — sizing wireless coverage, power budgets, and backbone topology to real constraints

  • Cellular knowledge, including signal quality assessment and SIM/eSIM provisioning

  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills

  • The ability to read and interrogate technical drawings and specifications

  • Excellent communication skills, credible and confident in front of customers

  • A flexible, self-directed approach and comfort moving between presales and support

  • A full UK driving licence

  • Experience with Ubiquiti UniFi, Teltonika RutOS, eero, or Starlink, and experience responding to enterprise RFPs or tenders, are a plus but not essential

What we offer

  • Full-time, permanent role

  • Flexible working

  • Learning and development

  • Private healthcare

  • Pension

  • 30 days holiday plus bank holidays
