Technical Support Engineer – Installation
Remote (UK), with regular UK travel and occasional European travel to client sites ~ Full-time, permanent ~ Reporting to the Technical Services Manager
Role Summary
Opious delivers managed network services — including managed Wi-Fi, cellular connectivity, and physical security infrastructure — to enterprise clients across the UK and Europe. We're looking for a Technical Support Engineer to install, commission, and then support that infrastructure in the field.
This is a hands-on role covering the full life of a deployment: attending site to install and terminate cabling, mount and weatherproof external infrastructure, configure network and cellular hardware, and prove the solution works before handover — then owning faults on that same site once it's live. Our estate is cellular-heavy and often outdoors on live operational or construction sites, so the work is as much about doing things properly in difficult conditions as it is about technical knowledge. It suits someone self-sufficient enough to work unsupervised on a client site and leave it clean, documented, and working.
The role includes participation in the on-call rota, with occasional out-of-hours and weekend work for maintenance windows and reactive callouts.
Key Responsibilities
The key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Install, route, terminate, and test structured cabling — copper and fibre — to a tidy, consistent standard
Build and install rack and cabinet equipment, including switches, gateways, and UPS units
Install external infrastructure to a weatherproof standard, including sealed IP-rated enclosures
Install and align antennas and satellite equipment, including Starlink on non-penetrating roof mounts
Install and commission cellular routers and antennas, including SIM/eSIM fitting and signal verification
Install wireless access points and IP CCTV cameras, validating coverage and performance on site
Configure devices to Opious build standards and adopt them into cloud management platforms
Prove service before handover through throughput, latency, and failover testing
Produce as-built records — labelling, photographs, cable schedules, asset capture
Take ownership of support tickets, diagnosing remotely first and attending site where necessary
Diagnose WAN, cellular, and LAN-side faults, and manage hardware replacement and RMAs
Participate in the on-call rota for out-of-hours escalations
About You
Strong hands-on field installation experience in networking, connectivity, or physical security infrastructure
Practical cabling ability across copper and fibre, with a high standard of workmanship
The ability to configure and commission network hardware to a build standard, not just install it
Sound networking fundamentals — addressing, DHCP, VLANs, routing basics, PoE
Strong diagnostic and fault-finding skills, and comfort working at height and outdoors
A strong grasp of safe working practices, RAMS, and site access requirements
The judgement to work unsupervised on client sites and make sensible calls in the field
Clear communication and good documentation discipline
A full UK driving licence
Experience with Ubiquiti UniFi, Teltonika RutOS, eero, or Starlink, and a current CSCS card or working-at-height tickets (IPAF/PASMA), are a plus but not essential — a solid grounding in networking and willingness to learn the rest matters more
What we offer
Full-time, permanent role
Flexible working
Learning and development
Private healthcare
Pension
30 days holiday plus bank holidays
